Belly Tank Racers
In the early stages of lake bed racing, most racers were on the constant hunt for more speed and streamlined body shapes. Common cars were used until the genius idea of Bill Burke came along. Using surplus fuel tanks from P-51 Mustangs and P-47 Thunderbolt WWII fighter planes and fitting them with fast engines and proper wheels, a new era was born triggering numerous world records as well as a spin off on an entirely new style of car. Photos are of the original Bill Burke car, the 1951 So-Cal Special, 2003 GM Lakester, and a 40’s belly tank lakester.
